  • “Property Rights, Land and Territory in the European Overseas Empires“

International Conference (Lisbon, ISCTE-IUL, 26-27 June 2014)

The occupation of territories, the rule over land and the definition of property rights were major concerns in the making and long-term development of almost every European overseas empire. The research on these topics has already achieved a huge body of results, but, for the most part, it has been pursued in a piecemeal fashion, either by disciplinary fields, empires or regions of the world, thus overlooking their interconnections. How can we compare the way issues of land, territory and property rights were dealt with across a variety of empires (e.g. Portuguese, Spanish, British, Dutch, French) and their different geographies? What can different branches of scholarship (from legal, economic, political, social and cultural history) offer each other? This conference aims to provide answers to these questions, by bringing these previously separate studies together into a common forum and setting them in comparative perspective.   • “A propriedade na construção do Império Português” | “Property in the making of the Portuguese empire”

Workshop (Lisboa, FCSH-UNL,  13 Novembro 2013)

O 2º workshop anual do Projecto tem como tema central a propriedade. Cerca de uma vintena de especialistas discute, a partir de perspectivas disciplinares variadas, qual foi o papel desempenhado pela propriedade nos vários tempos e lugares do império português. “Property in the making of the Portuguese empire” is the theme of the 2nd annual meeting of Research Project “Lands Over Seas”. About twenty scholars discuss, from a variety of disciplinary approaches, the role played by property and property-related issues along the Portuguese colonial experience. See full Programme. Conference Session (Bern, Switzerland, 19-22 August 2013)

Organized by José Vicente Serrão, as sessions 10.6 & 11.6 of the Rural History 2013 Conference, this Panel aims to discuss the diversity of solutions adopted in dealing with property rights and the institutions regulating and enforcing them across the European overseas empires. Papers focussing on the interaction between European institutions and the native ones are particularly welcome. Conference Panel (Lisbon, July, 17-20, 2013)

Organized by Eugénia Rodrigues & Mariana Cândido, within the framework of the CHAM International Conference on ‘Colonial (Mis)understandings: Portugal and Europe in Global Perspective 1450-1900’, this Panel aims to explore the dynamics associated to the relationship between land, women and power in the spaces related to European empires. Workshop (Lisboa, ISCTE-IUL, Novembro 19, 2012)

Workshop destinado à apresentação e discussão pública de resultados das investigações em curso no âmbito do Projecto. Está organizado em 3 painéis, cobrindo os territórios do Índico e do Atlântico. Ver Programa.

Mesa-redonda (Belém do Pará, Setembro 3-6, 2012) 

A mesa-redonda, inserida no  IV Encontro Internacional de História Colonial, pretende debater as questões da propriedade em contextos coloniais, na sua articulação com a problemática do domínio territorial. Conta com a participação de Márcia Motta (organizadora), José Vicente Serrão, Rosa Congost e Rui Santos. Ver resumo do Programa.

Simpósio Temático (Belém do Pará, Setembro 3-6, 2012) 

Este Simpósio Temático, organizado no âmbito do IV Encontro Internacional de História Colonial, visa discutir, em perspectiva comparada, o processo de ocupação e organização do território na América portuguesa do período colonial a partir do problema dos direitos de propriedade. Aceitam-se comunicações relativas ao Brasil, a outras partes do Império português, à América espanhola e à América inglesa.

O Simpósio admite um máximo de 25 comunicações, que serão distribuídas por várias sessões ao longo dos dias do congresso. A submissão de propostas decorre até ao dia 27 de Abril, devendo ser feita directamente junto da Organização do Congresso (ver). Colóquio (Lisboa, ISCTE-IUL, Junho 5, 2012)

Colóquio reunindo investigadores de Portugal e do Brasil, com vista a debater as várias perspectivas do processo de construção, representação e apropriação pública e privada do território brasileiro ao longo do século XVIII. Ver programa e resumos.
